What Is Muay Thai

What Is Muay Thai?

Muay Thai, also known as ‘The Art of Eight Limbs‘ is a martial art originated in Thailand that combines the use of punches, kicks, elbows and knee strikes. In addition, Muay Thai offers varied applications for self-defense at close-range, which incorporate clinching and sweeps. A combination of combat skill and athletic finesse, it’s far more than just punching and kicking; it is arguably the most effective striking art for both self-defense and competition at every level. From amateur Kickboxing to professional MMA, Muay Thai proves over and over again to be one of the most effective and well-rounded striking arts in the world.

Muay Thai Techniques

There are a variety of fundamental techniques within Muay Thai. As you’ll see, many of these offer some overlap and similarity with other styles, such as Boxing, Kickboxing, Tae Kwon Do and Karate. Primarily, these include:

  1. Stance and Movement
  2. Punches (Jab, Cross, Hooks, Uppercuts, Overhands, etc.)
  3. Kicking (Push-kicks or “Teeps”, and a wide variety of front, round and spinning kicks)
  4. Knee Strikes
  5. Elbow strikes
  6. Clinch & Sweeps
  7. Defense against clinch and strikes

Exploring these techniques demands training with consistency and patience. Muay Thai training is a fun journey of learning that never ends! There will always be the next goal for you to strive for and new skills to develop. Muay Thai is constantly being innovated by practitioners all over the world, both in terms of technique and training methods.

Muay Thai in the Charlotte Area

Those in the greater Charlotte region are fortunate that there are many great schools that offer Muay Thai and Kickboxing programs under the guidance of expert trainers. You’ll find these gyms offer essential amenities for Muay Thai and Kickboxing training, like heavy bags, a variety of target pads & mitts, as well as large mats. Some even offer full boxing rings and MMA cages. Having a well equipped and safe environment to train is essential for success.

Muay Thai and Mixed Martial Arts

For over a decade, many professional mixed martial artists have made it known that they incorporate Muay Thai training and concepts into their fight preparation. The result has been an overall elevation of striking within MMA. At every MMA event, well-rounded, hybrid striking styles are on display. The versatility & efficacy of Muay Thai across different range constraints during competitions reinforces its relevance at the highest levels of MMA competition.

It’s clear by now that Muay Thai is not just another martial art; it’s a journey into extremely effective self-defense, fitness, discipline and self-discovery.

Union Martial Arts Approach to Muay Thai

My job as a coach is that of a researcher and organizer. I’m constantly training and examining what we do and why we do it, to ensure our students are getting the best training and class-experience possible.

The Union Martial Arts approach to Muay Thai and striking in general is to first help students develop excellence in their stance, fundamental offense, defense and fitness. This is not a one-size-fits-all approach, but rather an exercise in helping individuals discover what works best for them. We take the time to meet one-on-one at regular intervals with our students throughout their training. In these meetings, we do a comprehensive review of a wide range of offensive and defensive techniques. We also do video study in order to help individuals more quickly grasp certain concepts and ideas. Often, these meetings lead to learning about the unique strengths of a student as opposed to only discovering their “mistakes”. We’ve found this approach invaluable to the goal setting, motivation and achievement of each individual.

Muay Thai is often referred to as “The Art of Eight Limbs”. To become comfortable throwing the wide array of  techniques in Muay Thai is no small feat–it requires consistency and dedication. Union Martial Arts thoroughly understands this and has developed a unique curriculum where students can practice all of the fundamentals – punching, kicking, knees, elbows and beyond. Week to week, students explore and develop their stance, offense, defense, timing and conditioning.

Union coaches always encourage their students to reach beyond their perceived boundaries while maintaining respect and camaraderie with their training partners. The men and women who train Muay Thai within Union are a team. From newcomers to the more advanced competitors, everyone encourages and supports each other.

Moreover, we believe that every individual has a different learning journey. Therefore, personalized training plans are designed taking into account the specific needs, strengths and limitations of each member.

Kids Muay Thai Classes

Union Martial Arts also holds vast expertise in training kids. Unlike adults, kids require a different approach when it comes to teaching martial arts —something Union excels at immensely. It has to be fun AND technical. It has to inspire AND discipline. In the right environment, kids want to rise to the expectations of their coaches. Some of the greatest Muay Thai practitioners and MMA strikers are right under our noses!

Through fun activities and engaging task focus, Union coaches educate young learners about basic Muay Thai moves and gradually advance them towards more complex techniques and concepts as they display their readiness. Additionally, these sessions aim not just at promoting self-defense for kids, but also values of respect and self-discipline.

Union’s coaches are extremely well-versed with unique pedagogical strategies that make learning enjoyable while inspiring discipline. We believe in laying a solid foundation wherein kids can learn, grow, develop skill and above all, enjoy every single moment of their time on the mat.
